In 1980 during a road trip while playing for the San Luis Algodoneros, a Mexican League professional baseball team, he survived a team bus crash. Three players and the manager were killed. Many careers were lost. An empty bottle of tequila was found under the driver's seat. That life changing and life taking moment in time remains an image so strong it echoes off memorials seen beside roads where others too have left life.
2010 marks the 30th anniversary of that bus crash, one hot day in August.
